Know the Right Fastener for Your Task

Sometimes you need more than a simple screw or nail. More complex tasks require more complex fasteners. Here are some suggestions.

Fasten structural wood-to-wood connection with heavy bolts. Always use a washer to reduce pressure. Bolts without tapered ends should be secured with a nut. Anchors hold screws or bolts in weak materials.

There’s more to know about bolts, though. Know what grade to buy. And check if you need UTS thread or metric thread.

Smaller fasteners are equally useful. Brads are great for hanging pictures or other household tasks. And staples are not just for paper! For example, large ones attach shingles to a root.

1. Before you read the passage, talk about these questions.

1. What are some different types of fasteners?

2. A screwdriver is used to insert what fastener?

2. Read the website for a fastener manufacturer. Then, mark the statements as true (T) or false (F).

1 _Heavy bolts can make structural connections.

2 _Nuts should be used to secure an anchor.

3 _Shingles are attached to roofs with brads.
